Surrounded by the Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Welcome to the most remote drive-in resort in northern Minnesota! Our Rookery lakeshore cabin is spacious, has a gas-log fireplace and overlooks quiet Pocahontas Bay. It is one of our 15 cabins at the resort. We have room for your whole family and extended family at our remote MN vacation getaway on the lake. If fishing is the number one priority for your vacation ask us about our packages and make sure you join us for our Sunday morning complimentary brunch of freshly-baked donuts. Get a report on fishing conditions and "hot spots."
Inside the Rookery Cabin is a well-equipped kitchen with a gas stove and oven, microwave, drip coffeemaker, toaster, refrigerator/freezer and plenty of cookware. Outside are docks for your boat or you can rent one of ours. 14’ and 16’ fishing boats or a Pontoon boat. There are 1,800 acres of water and 14 islands to enjoy. Big Lake has that wilderness feel and isolation. Lots of structure to fish on too.
Sleeping arrangement: Each bedroom has a king sized bed that easily converts to two twin-sized beds. Also, full bath with tub.
Unique Features
Looking to experience on an overnight canoe trip? Live away from the cabin for a night and sleep on an island under a sky studded with stars. You might even see the northern lights. Listen to the loons echoing across the water and the sizzling sounds of freshly-caught fish in the fry pan over your campfire. Stay on Spirit Island or Loon Island - both offer fully equipped base tent camps. Your cabin time can include some tent camping too.
Can’t live without the Rookery's Cabin amenities like a deck, picnic table, Weber grill, BBQ utensils, and patio furniture? Then drop anchor at the resort and enjoy all the included water toys: FREE use of kayaks, canoes, paddleboats with cabin rental.
Things To Do
Get out on the lake for a day of fishing. Big Lake is one of the DNR's top-rated walleye lakes and also holds northern pike, smallmouth bass, and perch - it’s right out your front door.
Explore numerous hiking trails at the resort and nearby. One of our favorites is the Bass Lake trail - a scenic waterfall, Berry picking, bird-watching, and wildlife. If you prefer a more rugged trail through stands of pine with high ridges with scenic overlooks, head to the Angleworm Trail. Take a day hike to Devil's Cascade which is 6 miles (one way) from the trail-head and see the waterfall on the Little Indian Sioux River.
Off-resort tourist activities include: Dorothy Molter Museum, the International Wolf Center, the North American Bear Center, the Ely-Winton Historical Society, and the Soudan Underground Mine State Park.
Things to remember: Bring your own bath towels.
