Lakeside deck! Lakeside cabin! Remote lakeside vacation experience! Horizon is shaded by mature pines and has that true Northwoods flavor. Boating Big Lake and stopping at different islands is fun for the entire family. Look beyond the Horizon and dip your paddle into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness - a day-trip must if you are here for a week. The glaciers left behind thousand lakes and streams, rocky shores and wonderful sandy beaches. We're the most remote drive-in resort in northern Minnesota!
Inside our Horizon Cabin is something the group cook will love, a well-stocked kitchen with full-size gas range, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, small electrical appliances with dinnerware and cookware. Satellite TV. Step our the door to the deck, charcoal Weber grill, picnic table, and patio furniture. Step a little further to Big Lake - 1,800 acres of water, 14 islands, and numerous inlets and bays. There are 15 well-spaced cabins at our Big Lake Wilderness Resort so bring your extended family too.

Big Lake is a DNR top-rated walleye lake is the crown jewel of rugged beauty. It is also known for northern pike, huge smallmouth bass, and perch. Bring your boat (there is a public boat ramp nearby - no motor-size restrictions) or rent one of our fishing boats or the pontoon boat. If fishing is the priority for your vacation, inquire about our Wilderness Fishing Sampler.
Our resort and lake is surrounded by The Superior National Forest, a wide variety of 4 season recreational opportunities like hiking, hunting, fishing, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Rock climbing is unique in the Forest; the exposed bedrock is some of the oldest in the world and there are many sheer cliffs and rocky knobs that provide places to climb and rappel.
Imagine freshly caught fish ready for the fry pan and a lakeside fire pit. This is probably the best place for fresh walleye shore lunches in the world. Within a few miles of the resort, there is exceptional hiking on many Echo Trails: Scenic waterfalls, seasonal berry picking, gorges over 250 feet wide, former iron ore mining pits, around the Whiskey Jack lakes with high ridges with scenic overlooks - look for Moose here! These areas are relatively untouched and many trails are minimally maintained on purpose.
Visit the Dorothy Molter Museum. The legendary last resident of the BWCAW, who died in 1986 after living most of her 79 years on Knife Lake. Watch one of the most elusive and misunderstood animals in the world: wolves at the International Wolf Center. You can even go on evening howling expeditions. Mining exploration at Minnesota's first and deepest underground iron mine is fun for kids and parents. Put on a hard hat and live life as a miner.
